i think making a .bash_profile text file and adding startx to is the best idea, when you log in from the console it automatically starts X for you and if you need back in to the console it only takes a CTRL & ALT + Backspace (or exit from the menu) and another advantage is if something ever goes wrong with the X you dont have a malfunctioning X respawning & dieing in an endless cycle...
