I have a Pentium-M @ 1.73Mhz. Computer model HP nx8220. Distro is SuSE 10.1 with kernel 2.6.16.21 For now it's summer and I don't have a thermometer for ambient temperatures. But I can tell you that in idle mode, my CPU stays at an average of 52º C and under load it reaches 75º C, this in summer and in a very hot place (about 30º C ambient temperature). Oh, and when the computer is running on bateries, it gets cooler and the ventilator stops running. I'll post the temperatures for this later. For your information, Pentium M's maximum temperature or thermal ceiling is 100º C. So far, mine only went to 85º C before I sucked a dust ball out of the ventilation shaft, so be careful with dust. Anyway, valuable information for posting info in this topic is: - processor model - cleaned ventilation shaft - plugged or unplugged from AC - ambient temperature - idle cpu temperature - loaded cpu temperature All the best to you |

Well that's not even as hot as my old PII 233 IBM 600 gets. The dam thing gets so hot that it I can feel the heat through 2 pillows. If I put it on my lap I will get a lap burn...really
I know it's not a Pentium M but this old clunker still works fine. Its been dropped a few times but this one it built like a tank. I have another IBM thinkpad R31 with a PIII 1 Gig its runs pretty good gets hot as well but nothing like my PII 600 and no pillows needed with this one. I just can't seem to part with the old PII clunker. I mainly keep it as an extra computer for guests, works great for browsing but that's all you can do with it cause the cpu is slow. Both are running Slackware 10.2 running XFCE 4.2 and both work great. It's funny when guests come over and use the laptop for the first time and I hand them over some pillows they give me a funny look but after like 20 min on the laptop they ask me if I can exchange the pillows cause they are getting hot. My next laptop will be a Lenovo based on the Core 2 whenever it starts shipping and I can get a good deal on. I have been on the R31 for a while now and need an upgrading. I like the IBM they just work great with Linux because most of the hardware that ships is Intel. I'm not a Intel fan but when it comes to Linux it's just works better with much better driver support. |
