Telnet issues

My issue with telnet persists.
My slack box is up and running.
I have uncommented the line in the config file to allow telnet.
I'm using ssh now.
I acquired my lan ip through ifconfig on the slackware box.
I port forwarded the lan ip for port 23.
Every time I dial in from a remote location I get the modem.
The only time I can get to my slackbox is if I'm telneting from my intranet directly to the lan ip.
I have been reading about NAT and Masquerading.
This sounds like it may play a part in this.
Do I need to configure those too?
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
