How do I set up a serial mouse?

I'm giving slackware a try. I have an old version 10.0 CD, and I'm trying an old PC.

I have a serial mouse on the system. The installation did not pick up the mouse. During the install, I entered that the mouse was on the first comm port /dev/tty0; I'm not certain that's correct, it may be on the second comm port.

I suppose I need to edit xorg.conf, or something?

First of all theres somewhere in the kernel that needs to be checked to accept serial mouses... it probably is enabled by default. but one never knows. Also serial mouses are usually found in /dev/input/mice i think.

Did you enable gpm? If not then
Code:
chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm
/etc/rc.d/rc.gpm start
will do that for you. This will let you see if your mouse is working even at the CLI. Just log in and shake that baby, you will see a block floating around if it is. Lets start there before you get into setting up X. If you mouse doesn't work from the Command Line then you will want to re-run that part of the setup script. do
Code:
pkgtool
and pick Setup and then mouse to do this. and try a different device.
If everything runs well in the CLI then you should run
Code:
xorgconfig
to get x set up check out the slackbook for details

Serial mice are on /dev/ttyS0(COM 1) or /dev/ttyS1(COM 2) (S for serial).
You can set this up for the CLI as mentioned above using Setup. And you can set it up for the GUI when you run xorgconfig.
I wouldn't recommend enabling GPM, though, as it often causes problems with the mouse under X.
