How do I play DVD's on slack?

Ok, I guess I took it for granted that there dvd's would work on slack automatically (like in redhat and mandrake) but I guess that this usually not the case

anyway,ya, i tried searching but they all tell me to change the link that is /dev/dvd and point it to what it is recognized as bootup /dev/hdd

should i do this, because i don't want to screw up the fact that my /dev/hdd can be read just fine (if i mount /dev/hdd, i can manually select the vob files, but menus and chapters don't work, plus only 1/4 of the movie will load at any one time)

i have been using xine and i don't think it is the software that is causing the problem, or is it?

edit: /dev/dvd is currently a symbolic link to /dev/sr0

I had to add myself to the 'disk' group, and compile/install libdvdcss. Someone else might have a better method, though.

i was able to get mplayer to read the dvd's and play them (but no menus)

i also went ahead, deleted /dev/dvd, and then recreated it as a symlink to /dev/hdd and now mplayer and xine can see /dev/dvd

however, with xine, it gives me an error about my country's laws and that i cannot play the encrypted dvd

i know about dvd encryption, but how do i get over this situation?

to play a dvd:
-mplayer (no menus)
-vlc (menus i think: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/screensh...1-wxgtk-02.png)

i like mplayer more though.

h3pc4t said it - did you compile and install libdvdcss? That's only for xine, though - mplayer doesn't give a damn. If it's working for you, I wouldn't worry with xine.

Xine

I am still trying to get my Xine to play dvds...

TheOneAndOnlySM In the setup menus you can choose the zone... so I guess you just need to choose your right zone.
