I have the nforce 128 and did not need to do anything except make the changes to the XF86Config file. I change the driver for the device to "nv" and it works fine. All the high resolutions, OpenGL. Sounds like your install got hosed.
If I understand your question correctly, you are having trouble with your nForce2 motherboard at boot-time. This is odd.
I myself have an nForce2 motherboard, and frankly, I didn't need any drivers whatsoever. I just installed slak normally and compiled my own kernel and it worked. I realize this may not help you in any way, but try doing a menuconfig (cd <location of kernel-source> usually /usr/src/linux then type 'make menuconfig') and look for chipset support and such. Also make sure that, if you have an AMD proc, you've compiled the AMD support into the kernel. Because if you have not, your nForce may not work at all.
This is all I can come up with, I hope i understood your question. And I hope you will be able to solve the problem....

I download the nvidia drivers off their site (the tar.gz ones, not all the various binaries)
I extract them, do make; make install.... compile goes smoothly.
Upon reboot, I get pages of insmod errors. Ranging from incorrect parameters to file not found errors on files like nvnet
I did the same thing on another nf2 box last night, identical computer! What happened?
I have been through this quite recently, installing 9.1 on a Shuttle SN41G2 box. It took me two steps:
1. To get the built-in network card working using the NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.tar.gz download and adding alias eth0 nvnet into the modules.conf file
2. Getting the graphics working with the Unified nVIDIA package and recompiling
I now have the network, graphics and sound working just fine.
I have an nForce2 board too, and did the same thing that u did.... and also a few other things, that are mentioned on the README.... first off, for graphics, u need to change 'nv" to "nvidia" in ur /etc/X11/XF86Config...... as for the sound and the network, u need to add the right aliases as somebody above already mentioned.... I didn't bother with it, because I already have a network card, and the sound.... even if u do it and get it to run, u aren't going to get Soundstorm...... nVidia's nvaudio module is just a slightly modified i_810 module.... it doesnt really give u ANY advanced features that are available on the MCP-T chipset..... ur probably better off with ALSA.... But, I dont really know about that, coz I just installed Slack yesterday, and ahve been using Linux for just over two weeks now... so, cant really comment on how good ALSA and otehr stuff is.... not yet... :-) hope that helps.... and check the readme on the nVidia site for the exact alias to use.....
Oh no! Don't tell me there are probs with the Slack 9.1 and NVidia chipset features....I recently got the motherboard and have yet to install slack... what will happen?
I am not worried about sound or AGP considering that I have a good sound and video card...but the network doesn't work? Well...how exactly does one fix this problem? I have the disk that came with the Asus board but do they have the Linux drivers?
Also...will I have to recompile the kernel to get the onboard NIC to work because I am nowhere NEAR ready to compile a kernel. Heck I am still getting the hang of doing makes.
Can anyone else give me some help? I am now quite concerned with installing slack on my new motherboard....
absolutely no issues with slack and nForce2 .... thats my current setup, and its working fine.... the only thing that will be lacking is the Dolby Encoding that was availbale on the Soundstorm mobos....
U WILL need to goto www.nvidia.com and download the up2date drivers for nForce... Get both the nForce drivers, and the display drivers.... both are pretty simple to install and will work fine..... Be SURE to read the README before installation as that tells u what lines need to be changed in a cpl of files..... For the display, u need to make bout two-three changes to XF86Config, and for the ethernet, u will need to set an alias in modules.conf .... as long as u use ALSA for sound, u need not worry bout the alias for the nvaudio.... but maybe u may want to get rid of the entire audio pack from nvidia before installing, or u will end up with LOADS of errors during startup, bout its inability to load nvaudio .... in which case, u'll have to go and remove the module from starting up again...... hope this helps.....
