How do I install ndiswrapper?

I'm a TOTAL newbie
I have Slackware 11, with kernel 2.6.17.13

Ok, I downloaded ndiswrapper-1.47.tar.

I tried to install it with installpkg, but I got an error saying that must end with .tgz. So I converted it into a .tgz file with some online web service (I forgot the name).

Anyway, I did "installpkg", and got the following:

Code:
root@darkstar:~/wifi# installpkg ndiswrapper1.tgz
Installing package ndistwrapper1...
PACKAGE DESCRIPTION:

root@darkstar:~/wifi#
And that's it (no description). Did it installed the program?

I've been all day trying to find out how to install a single package. I read about "make", "installpkg" and some "make && make install". I was only "succesful" with "installpkg".

i'm very tired after many hours reading(almost half day) on the internet. please help me

If you need any info, please ask.

You downloaded the source code for ndiswrapper. You need to compile it for it to work. Alternatively, you could download a prebuilt package from linuxpackages.net.

I doubt it very much. As randomsel says, you probably got the source code. But installpkg works only with executable code. You can use source code, but not with installpkg -- with source, the steps are different.

Make sure you get the correct source distribution. Go to http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/ and download ndiswrapper-1.47.tar.gz, which contains the source code for the latest version. Unpack this file into a directory ndiswrapper-1.47 with the Unix command "tar xzf ndiswrapper-1.47.tar.gz". That should produce a directory with all the source files. "cd ndiswrapper-1.47" to go down into the directory, then read the files README and INSTALL you find there. Follow the directions. It's a bit of a project.

To successfully compile ndiswrapper, you will need to have the include files for the Linux kernel you're running, probably down inside in /usr/src/linux. Probably you do, but if not, that's yet another step you'll have to get through.

Possibly you'll be able to fine a precompiled Slackware package for ndiswrapper, which may save you some work, but a precompiled package has to be matched with the version of Linux you're running. Starting from source is better.
