How do I change what sound card Alsa configures?

When I run "alsamixer" it says the card it is configuring is "Dummy". I know Linux detects my real sound card because it says so in "dmesg". How can I change what card "alsamixer" configures? Thanks.

alsamixer -c 0
or
alsamixer -c 1

if that doesn't work does alsaconf show the right card to set up.
