Here is an educational story for people like me who think they are pretty bright and like to do things the hard way. Only to find that "back to basics" is much more efficient...
I installed Slackware 9.1 after trying my first Linux, Fedora. I wanted to get challenges.
Installation was a snap (with manual open on my laptop while installing to desktop). However, my MS wireless USB Intellimouse refused to work.
So, I surfed and found lotīs of articles on the subject. I tried them all, no success. I compiled my kernel with full USB support, messed it up and ended up re-installing. After 10 hours of intensive troubleshooting I finally located the problem...
...I had to press the "connect"-button on the bottom of the mouse...LOL!
well, there was one other thing. I had to make gpm -m /dev/input/mice instead of the default .../mouse.
just wanted to share this since it really made me laugh

oops, wasnīt that simple. the pointer only moves in vertical direction when I move the mouse in horizontal axis. Buttons seem to move the pointer to right. any solutions?

after compiling a new kernel with full usb support everything is fine
