how can one adjust the monitor brightness?

Researching this problem, I find very often this solution:
Code:
echo -n 100 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness
Unfortunately, I don't have that on my old PC:

Quote:
ls -F --group-directories-first /proc/acpi/

button/
embedded_controller/
power_resource/
processor/
thermal_zone/
dsdt
event
fadt
info
sleep
wakeup
here's lspci:

If you are using xfce, there is a plugin for adjusting the brightness. Not sure if it uses the acpi interface or not though.

No, I am using ratpoison.

I've seen also suggestions that on some machine one should use
Quote:
/sys/class/backlight
But that directory is empty on my machine.
