I use plait for streaming Internet radio from my X-less Neoware thin client running Slackware 12.2.

Usage: plait -s "genre|station name|what_you're_looking_for" -t 5

Bugfix: not closing the audio device caused a few samples to be lost.
Bugfix: audio_set_rate() was not called (!?!).
Additional command line options "--doublespeed" and "--halfspeed"
(couldn't find better names). See the manpage.

Changed the buffer algorithm (-b). I'm not sure whether it's better
or worse now.
Supports multiple files on the command line. Pressing Ctrl-C will
skip to the next MPEG file, pressing it twice within one second

Support for list files. See also the -@ option in the manpage.

As it happens I had, after 11 years, the exact same question.

As a source of an mpg audio BIT stream. Not radio.
So the url should be a reference to an .mp3 file on the web.

As the name already suggest: mpg123 can only handle audio MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 stream data (layers 1, 2 and 3), not even MPEG 4 audio (often called .m4a).
