hi, i'm having problems accessing the internet with linux. i tried using netconfig to configure my ip address, dhcp gateway, and my subnet mask, and i have no luck. i don't exactly understand linux yet so any help could be appreciated, thanks.
You did not say how you are connecting. Are you on a single box connected to an adsl router configured by your isp? are you on a lan and accessing the net via a gateway box.
Your settings would be different.
I just did a win2k standalone box with isp provided modem by hand and all I had to tell it is that protocol was tcp/ip, authentication was dhcp, and the isp's primary and secondary dns were this and that.
Slackware's netconfig expects little more in the same situation. Do not assign an ip a standalone box in this situation.
If you are on a lan and the lan has fixed ip enter box ip and ip of gateway. In this situation, most probably the gateway negotiates connection with isp and the modem is in bridge mode in which cas you provid isp's primary and secondary dns when netconig asks.
I am having the same problem. I have a linksys Wireless G and Ethernet Router. I also have dsl, and when I try to get to the internet, No work. Just for fun, i tried getting into the router, and it worked, so I definatley have a way out, as far as the router. Does anyone know how to get farther than just the router?
Windows IPCONFIG info:
Connection-Specific DNS Suffix: ZyZMG456
Ip Address: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
When you say you can get to the router, how do you know? If you can get to the router but not out to the internet it could be a DNS issue. Try pinging an external server using the ip address not the name. DNS servers are set in the file /etc/resolv.conf, so you might have a look at this, too. Post the output from ifconfig and, if you are connecting via wireless to your router, the output of iwconfig as well.
When I mean I can get to the router, i mean that I can enter 192.168.1.1 in my web browser, and it will bring up a sign in, when sign in, I can get to the router's internal utility and setup. You mean ping, as in just enter the ip address into the adress bar of my browser and see if that will work, or use telnet?

change your /etc/resolv.conf file
enter in there
nameserver IP_of_router
or what i do
nameserver IP_OF_ISP_DNS_1
nameserver IP_OF_ISP_DNS_2
thats for Infohungrys problem
and chike:
if your interface is eth0(witch probably is)
try typing
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 IP_of_router up
and then edit /etc/resolv.conf as i said above
