Host restricted area ?
 

Hey,

today i tried to install Slackware. And i ran into trouble at the very start.

When it starts to load things, it hangs at this line:

hde: attached ide-disk driver.
hde: host restricted area => 1

It just hangs there. I waitied for 15 mins and nothing. Does anyone here might have a clut to waht is wrong? I'd be more then glad if someone knows the solution.

What kind of system do you have? You may need to boot one of the other kernels.

Hum, i've got 1 SATA disk.

I'll try the other kernels now.

Slack10 doesn't support installing to a SATA drive.

Search the forums for more info -- there is a installation ISO that someone (who was kind enough) to create for this purpose.

I remember there were also some long discussions and I think some suggestions on alt.os.linux.slackware you might search for.

Works like meteor.
You just have to define it on cfdisk /dev/sda before running setup on boot console

Hey, yea it has something to do with STA support. but i've got kernel 2.4 .27 whic should support my southbridge (ICH5).

but how to do that if i cant get into cfdisk? The sistem hangs while it loades modules.

It depends though on SATA Controller.
I have shitty Silicon Image "inplanted":D on my Asus board.
For some mystical reason Slack sopports this module with driver "sata_sil"
Please note that this Silicon Image SATA Controller is not supported by many Linuxes, such
as Yoper, Vidalinix:cry: , Suse 9.2 and many more.

Hum ... I've been told to make a sata.i floppy.

How do i make on? I use RAWWRITEXP.EXE and the option for File Type is *.img. Where is the sata.i img file? :/

Acctually not....By now i've already pretty much gave up on Linux. The hell with it. And i've been only using it 2 days. Using...Well trying to get it working.

Sofar, i've tried the following methods:

1.DVD Image with kernel 2.4.27; has sata.i in /kernels and in /bootdisks
1.1With disk in Enhanced mode -> host protected area => 1
1.2With disk in Enhanced mode off (btw is this in Legacy mode then?!) -> havent tryed it yet, will do it now

2.Floppy with sata.i bootdisk
1.1With disk in Enhanced mode -> host protected area => 1
1.2With disk in Enhanced mode off (btw is this in Legacy mode then?!) -> usb segment fault


Well .... I'm tired, but still...If somebody can confirum that the disk is in Legacy mode when not in enhanced mode i think i can install it.

Look, Slack is not easy distro to deal with! Most of things are done by hand. Why don't you start with
something less complicated. such as Debian for a example or Mandrake. It is easy to blame glasses for you blindness if you do not know how to wear them:Pengy:

Okay, it's a fact i've been working my ass of trying to get this working. And it's gonna work or i'm leaving Liinux for good.

In the past 2 days i belive i've accumulater quite a bit of knowledge. I've never delt with Linux before. So i dont think Slackwar will give me any problems if I could only install it.

In this case go to WWW.slackware .org and download 2cd images of version 10. Burn, Install
Fallow the instruction on screen
boot >ENTER
#CFDISK /dev/sda (do not forget to write partitions on disk)
after partitioning type
#setup

Heh .... Where's the catch? I've got a DVD image of 10.1 current from last week.

Smthn is wrong and i dont know why. I dont know why wont it install even if it has sata support.
