Ho do I compile kernel without rivafb?
 

Hi, I've searched through dozens of threads with problems installing nvidia driver with rivafb installed.

I've tried so many things to disable it but no luck.

lsmod doesn't return it so it's not loaded.

rivafb in my /etc/hotplug/blacklist and has always been there.

I have found no thread yet that has explained how to compile a kernel without rivafb support.

I am comfortable recompiling the kernel, but I don't know which option to uncheck when configuring.

The kernel I'm compiling is 2.6.10 and I use menuconfig when customizing the kernel.

why do you want to recompile again? You can have the module, you just cannot have it and the nvidia module loaded at the same time. This is not a problem as the nvidia-installer is warning you not to load them both.

The nvidia installer I am using (version 6111) gives me the following error:

Error: Your kernel was configured to include rivafb supprt! The rivafb driver conflicts with the NVIDIA driver, please reconfigure your kernel and *disable* rivafb supprt, then try installing the NVIDIA kernel module again.

When I press ok the next message i get is that the installation has failed and the program exits. There is no option for me ignore the warning and install anyway.


lsmod reads:

ipv6
ide_scsi
agpgart

If lsmod output just these 3 modules, I would think you nearly have enabled all
drivers as built-in in config.

To disable rivafb, go to
Device Drivers -> Graphics support and disable nVidia Riva support

I just recompiled without the nvidia riva support and now when i run the nvidia installer i get the following message:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel...

try reinstall nvidia driver with :
sh nvidia-installer -k <your kernel version>

with 2.6.10, I never did get a good build out of it with the 66 driver or the 6111. I ended up using 2.6.8 to get it all to work.

Ok so I tried the the -k <kernel version> and it made it throught the installer without any error. However, I stil can't start X. I know my xorg.conf is ok because I can boot up my odl 2.4.26 kernel and get nvidia to run.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but in my case would that be:

"sh NVIDIA-Linux-1.0-x86-6111-pkg1.run -k 2.6.10" ?

I even tried -k linux-2.6.10 and I even tried -k /usr/src/linux-2.6.10.

In ever case the Nvidia driver was compiled but X still would not start.

I'm going to try the 2.6.8 kernel to see if I have any more luck.

You need the 6629 drivers or a patched version of the 6111 drivers for kernel 2.6.10 to work with nvidia. if you do a google search or search on this site, you may get link to the patched drivers. If you are using a Riva TNT 32 meg card, it won't work with the 6629 drivers.

I installed the nvidia update and it gave me that warning, I proceeded anyway and my system works fine. Like mentioned before it just doesn't support both at the same time, so you won't be able to run anything with that module.

So here's the verdict:

I tried the 6629 driver on the 2.6.10 kernel and halfway through the installer the program would just crash. Argh.

Anyway, I found the 2.6.7 kernel in the 'testing' folder on the second slackware cd and I gave it a try. The 6629 installer crashed again. Pickleshoes. However, the 6111 installer loaded fine and X started up. Nothing says bliss like seeing that 'nvidia' boot screen.

Thank you all so much for all your time and effort. I would still be pulling out my hair over that 2.6.10 kernel without this forum.
