High-pitched noise after installing ati drivers
 

Hi, i've got this strange problem after installing latest ati drivers.
After reboot my speakers started making constant high-pitched noise.
There is couple of warnings after '/usr/sbin/ alsactl restore' saying about name/index mismatch for Mic controls. Amarok hangs after pressing 'play' button, mpg321 displays 'ALSA Write error'.
It's look like a bug in alsa drivers, but i can't understand why it's happened after installing ati drivers. Any suggestions?

distro: Slackware 11
kernel: 2.6.17.13
alsa: 1.0.11

First reconfig your alsa with alsaconf, after that try changing volume settings from alsamixer.

already did that, no effect

Hmmm ... has this only happened with the latest drivers or have other versions done it as well ? Also, are you sure it is the speakers making the noise ? I know on my laptop I do get a high-pitched noise from various components, including the video card, when it is under moderate/heavy use (like if I move my mouse from side to side really fast ... I can hear it now). I can hear the CPU working too ... but you can just barely hear it, it's very high-pitch.

Yeah, it's coming from speakers, volume decreases when i decrease it in alsamixer for pcm or master channel.

I switched to integrated sound, for now. It works well - i've just enabled it in bios and runned alsaconf.

I don't have windows on this machine to check it for sure.

I read something about this a number of times on several forums where they do hardware and software reviews.
I believe it's a conflict between two drivers, and the solution has always been to upgrade/change one of the drivers. I think a sound-card driver was the main culprit.

I know this is vague, but I didn't commit the stuff to memory because I didn't have the issue personally, but just came across it a number of times.. Be persistent with Google, searching for 'Linux drivers squealing sound' or 'sound card driver squealing' and stuff like this, and you definitely will come across the same threads and/or reviews I did about the issue, and how it was easily solved..
The name of the sound cards which had this issue is on the tip of my fingers, but once again, it eludes me (Creative-Sound maybe, or Sound Blaster?). If I think of it, I'll post. Better yet, what sound device are you using? Probably the culprit one ;)
