Question Help with wpa_gui wireless connection

So I've been trying to connect to a wireless network on Slackware. It seems I was able to connect to the internet once and then was unable to connect again. I ran

wpa_supplicant

and then

wpa_gui

I then scanned to find the access point and typed the Psk (password) . I then connected via wpa_gui. Though the connection went very slowly. I was connect for about 30 minutes and my computer overheated and shut off unexpectedly.

When I turned it on again, I tried to connect the same way I did before and had no success. Sometimes it would say connected though Mozilla still didn't load any webpages.

Could someone please help?

I will post more details about details in a follow up post. Thank you so much

You should try one of the suggested methods for connecting to wireless in Slackware... either Network Manager or wicd.

Try using netconfig as root to choose Network Manager (more people seem to prefer NM over wicd).

I use rc.inet1.conf on my laptop instead of NetworkManager or wicd. For this to work, edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf and add your SSID/network:

Code:
network={
        scan_ssid=1
        ssid="your-ssid"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
        psk="passphrase"
}
Then edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf:

Code:
## Example config information for wlan0
...
IFNAME[4]="wlan0"
IPADDR[4]=""
NETMASK[4]=""
USE_DHCP[4]="yes"
...
WLAN_ESSID[4]="your-ssid"
WLAN_WPA[4]="wpa_supplicant"
More information is available on the wiki:

If you often connect to different networks, NetworkManager or wicd might be easier to use, though.
