I'm trying to start MySQL on my new Slackware 9 box. It's a fresh install.
The problem is everytime I try to run mysqld, it says it can not find the program. So, after doing a bunch of reading and web surfing, I tried safe_mysqld. This seems to work except as soon as it starts, it tells me it has stopped. So, I run ps x, and I think it is still running, but I'm not sure. When I try mysql -u root it gives me an error message that it can not connect through /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock (I think that is it).
Other things I have tried include but are not limited to a multitude of mysqladmin commands. Most of these result in an error message of not being able to connect on port 3306 and it telling me to try pinging the server (mysqladmin ping) or telneting to the port. Neither work telneting gives me connection refused on port 3306.
It sounds to me like MySQL isn't starting. This is usually due to something really silly that's normally logged in your error log. Have a read of http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t=hostname.err to find out how to find your error log for MySQL.
Post the results of anything you try back here and we'll take it from there.
