I'm not entirely new to Linux but I have never done what I'm attempting to do. I'm trying to setup a box with slackware to do the following things:

1) Have the box act as a dns server.

2) Have the box act as a web server.

3) Have the box serve as an SMB server on a network with no domain or workgroup controller. (the box could act as one if need be) If there are possible alternatives for sharing files to windoze boxes on the network, I am open to that.

My questions are:

1) What options should I select during the slackware install for this?

2) What order should I set these up in. I'm assuming dns then smb or httpd.

3) Are there any sites, forums, or threads I should refer to? I have looked at tldp.org and I have found it very helpful and will probably use it as a reference for most of this, just wondering if there are any other places you might suggest.

You could start with a minimal install ( here is a good start http://www.seanm.ca/eden/minslack.html) and them add the packages ssh, bind, apache and samba.

If you are working with Active Directory, Linux Magazine had an artical about a year or so ago about using Windbind and PAM to authenticate. I followed that when I set up a server at work.

any idea how I would take that link you gave tangle, and add the abiword and xfce to it? i tried adding them to that section, at got missing libraries. so i added everything in L section and still no go.

I think http://shilo.is-a-geek.com/slack/ has the answers youre looking for, it has an excellent yet simple tutorial on setting up a webserver, ftp and ssh for slackware.

http://www.hostlibrary.com/installin...l_php_on_linux is a tutorial for installing and configuring, apache, mysql and php.

I highly recommend them both cause its simple enough that a newly convert user like myself could get it up runnin. Good Luck

I'm not so interested in ftp, as I'm trying to use the box to hold my huge collection of multimedia for accessing from various boxes around the house. Samba seemed to me like the best option. I'll certainly check out the guides you've posted.

just install slack 12 and in the /srv/www/htdocs folder make a folder titled "mp3z". any file in that folder can be found in 127.0.0.1/mp3z/ =D i think theres a plug in for winamp that makes it so you can stream the data rather than download it.
