Help! slack 10 locks up when exiting xorg 6.7.0

I have installed slack 10 on my future file/print server. I used the origional xorg.conf file to configure X, the only modifications were to select the driver and set the horiz and vert freq of the monitor. The system works fine until I exit X. The return key works, however I cannot enter any text. This affects all virtual terminals, the only exit is the 3 finger salute.

Anybody have a clue???

Thanks in advance.

I've had that happen before also - I don't think that it's a problem with your machine, maybe with startx. Sometimes a few CTRL C's work and then wait a bit. If not, you can always use CTRL+ ALT+n (n is one of 1,2,3,4,5,6). The will open a new console that you can log into and continue working.

I will try the cntl -c next time. I may not have been clear in my first post. The virtual terminals
ctrl altn (1,2,3,4,5,6) also act in the same manner - no response, I cannot even log in.

Hi again,

OK, are you using kdm as your login manager for graphical interfaces? I noticed that if I asked for a console session from the kdm menu I get the exact same problem. This seems to be a kdm issue. Some other things you could try are: CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, which is supposed to terminate X windows OR while you're in the gui session open a virtual console (like konsole) and change the run level with telinit n, where n is the new run level which would be a non-graphical one (maybe 3). I think that if you have the same services set up on the different run level, they will continue running without interruption. Finally, you could always boot into a non-graphical run level (set in file /etc/inittab) and then just use a graphical interface as needed by doing a startx command.

I have been unable to work on it for a while. My init run level is 3. I use the kde to administer the system. This system is going to be my future file server. Thank-you for the suggestions sofar, however, no success yet.

Upgraded to KDE 3.3.1, problem mostly gone. Must change font size after exiting to get text to fit on screen.
