OK, and now the output from dmesg when you plug it in. And also the output from lsmod.

OK, so you don't have the module loaded. Assuming you have the driver installed correctly, then issuing a modprobe rt2870sta should load the driver. Check with lsmod again. If the driver loads, you should see activity on interface ra0

after modprobe rt2870sta and lsmod I can see it in the modules list, but for ra0 nothing. iwconfig ra0/ifconfig ra0 just tell me there is no such device.

OK, so now check that the firmware is at /lib/firmware, and that the permissions are correct. Should be owned by root and perms should be -rw-r--r--.

Can you attach the o/p from dmesg when you plug the dongle in

the perms are as stated, and if by "o/p from dmesg" you mean what's printed in the system console, then that would be absolutely nothing.

What do you get from the o/p of ifconfig -a. As to why you get nothing from the dmesg command, that is quite strange as it normally will show loads of info. Just thinking out loud, it may be that your firmware isn't being installed to the dongle. So can you also say what groups you are in?

OK,

First you might add yourself to the plugdev and netdev group, which if I understand correctly, are needed to allow users access to the usb and network interfaces. And the ifconfig-a above was whilst you had no driver loaded. Just trying to see what it is with the driver loaded as SWs udev rules might have changed the device name from Ra0 to Wlan0.

gonna try that. strangely enough though, I had no problems reading/writing on my memory stick.

You did notice the groups were for 'root' that gujedan posted.

Ok, added myself to the groups (and yes, those were the groups for root as stated by onebuck, right now I login as root each time).

The ifconfig -a results above were recorded while rt2870sta module was running (if that is what you mean under driver).

A fair bit of googleing later, and it seems that for your particular dongle, the ralink RT3070USB driver is needed. This link has a good explanation even though it is based on Ubuntu.

At first I was a bit curious as why my make dmesg output was not as described here:

but I did not pay much attention to it. Now that I found a thread on ubuntu forums about similar wireless adapter problems, from a post I read that "I had forgotten that I had to add the WUSB600N to the rt2870.h file."
So I opened the file and replaced a certain part of a line with RT2870 and the make output looked just it was supposed to be.
A minor advancement I guess, because modprobe 2870sta still does not make the adapter work.
