I cant do anything now! My partition table is gone, and fdisk /mbr said

Unable to open /mbr

Does this mean my harddrive has just been erased? I had a lot of important files on there! I cant even boot to slack anymore so I can back it up to another computer! Is there any way that I can get my old partition table back? I did not write a new one yet.

OK don't panic. The first thing you should do is boot from the first slackware CD. The very first command you need to run is "cfdisk /dev/hda" and make the root partition bootable, and write it to the partition table. cfdisk is pretty straight forward. there are options at the bottom of the screen to tab through, and nothing is actually written until you say yes to the write option. Yes, zeroing out your MBR means you totally erased it . The good news is only your MBR is gone and not your data. I am sorry if I was not clear on that , I should have given you a warning.

Sorry for tasking so long to reply, for some reason it did not mail me a notification that someone had responded. I did a little research, and found a way to recover the old table using GNU Parted and GPart, I will try that this afternoon and let you know how it goes.

That did not work so well, gpart would not run properly. I found a more complicated way to restore it, and I am going to try that next. After I get it back I think I will just boot to windows, back up all of my data across the network, and erase the whole drive. That should fix any problems. Thank you for all of your help this past week.

Best regards,
LBB
