Help installing Openldap on Slackware 9.1
 

Currently I'm trying to migrate all my MS servers to Linux :) in particular Slackware 9.1

I have just finished installing 9.1, downloaded and installed swaret, ran a full update, and use fluxbox for any GUI related stuff...mainly so I can have multiple xterm sessions up on 1 screen otherwise I'd ALT-F# to each. Furthermore I have Samba 3 up a running with a very general config. This config seems to work fine in a very basic manner.

Anyways, I can't seem to find a package for Openldap. Anyone have a decent proceedure for installing Openldap on Slackware 9.1 for centralize Linux users database and MOSTLY for Samba integration.

There is an OpenLDAP package that is part of the DropLine Gnome system at:

Thanks...but what if I didn't want Dropline-Gnome? This installation will be configured as a server that needs to be running 24/7 and I don't want to install any unnecessary services/apps. I've also read some "issues" with dropline.

Have a proceedure to install/compile Openldap from source?

If you don't want to compile ot yourself, there are openldap packages (server and client) at linuxpackages.net.

Do note, however, that Slackware does not support PAM (pluggable authenticatoin modules) due to security concerns. I do not know of any other way to authenticate logins against LDAP. While it is of course possible to get PAM working on Slackware, I believe you have to recompile a lot of packages to do this, and you would be introducing the very security risks Patrick decided not to.

Perhaps a script that synchs /etc/{passwd,group} against the LDAP server could do the trick, though.
