Hauppauge WinTV TD-500 tv card

Recently purchased this card having seen "Works under Linux" in several user reviews. Card seems to be recognized at low level by the system (see extract from dmesg below)

Code:
[ 2.431754] usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

[ 10.088496] DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 0 (DiBcom 7000PC)...
[ 10.293038] DiB0070: successfully identified
[ 10.297219] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software demuxer.

[ 10.685018] Registered IR keymap rc-dib0700-rc5
[ 10.689718] input: IR-receiver inside an USB DVB receiver as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.0/0000:01:06.2/usb2/2-1/rc/rc0/input4
[ 10.698298] rc0: IR-receiver inside an USB DVB receiver as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.0/0000:01:06.2/usb2/2-1/rc/rc0
[ 10.702886] dvb-usb: schedule remote query interval to 50 msecs.
[ 10.707177] dvb-usb: Hauppauge Nova-TD-500 (84xxx) successfully initialized and connected.
[ 10.712179] usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700
So firmware, driver etc all seems to work and report to the kernel that it is ready to use.

However, all attempts to tune the card fail.

I have tried using Kaffeine (which I always used to use with an older TV card) - in this application you need to supply some information regarding which transmitter you are tuning to. No problem, I have those details. But no stations are found.

I have also tried using VLC. Not much feedback here, just a progress bar, but when it finishes, no stations have been found.

Also tried the CLI utility 'scan'. Loads of output, but every 8-10 lines the unwelcome message "WARNING: >>> tuning failed!!!" appears.

I have plugged the same aerial into a standard digital TV box and television - plenty of channels available.

I have tried the board with and without a TV aerial amplifier. This makes one small difference: Using Kaffeine, during the channels scan the feedback bar shows signal levels as high as 72% during the scan. Without the amplifier, the signal is only about 40%. But no stations actually get found with or without amp. I notice that as well as signal level there is a meter which shows SNR (Signal-to-Noise-Ratio?) and this, under all circumstances shows 1%.

I am wondering if I should be doing something with the remote control and have pressed random buttons on this, but that also has made no difference.

Any help gratefully received.

As is the case with just about everything Hauppauge sells, supporting this model in Linux is evidently a bit complex. Moreover, there also appears to be a revision of this card sold only in the UK that may currently remain unsupported.

For most of the current Linux information on this card, as well as the more traditional Nova T 500, check the V4l wiki page here: http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Ha...nTV-NOVA-T-500
