Hard freezes, desktop changes, and fsck problems.

I have a Dell optiplex gx280 P-4 3 Ghz with a gig of ram. I have Intel Corporation 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller. I know there problems with intel drivers. I have an 80 gig HD with multi-boot setup. WINXP, mepis8, slackware13-32bit with ext4 fs, and slackware13-32bit with ext3 fs. Both slack installs are fresh installs.

My problems are:

1. I get hard freezes. Mouse will not move. I cannot change to another VT. CTRL-ALT-DEL will not work. I have to use the reset button. This happens on both slack installs.

2. Ext4 install. When I login the desktop never seems to be the same. It is like I am logging to different users. Widgets that I have added to the desktop will not stick. Things are there that I did add to the desktop.

3. Ext4 install. Twice when I start slack. Fsck said there errors and nodes were assigned different locations. It said I could login as root to fix the problem. It took 4 tries to got logged in. I fixed the problems took about 20 minutes.

4 Ext3 install. Firefox will only start for a few seconds then shuts down. If I start it from the terminal I get errors about a shared library it cant access or does not exist. I am not at that computer so I cannot give you the exact errors. I will when I ger back to it.

I do not believe it is a faulty hard drive. I had crunchbang linux and slack 12.2 installed on those partitions with no problems at all. I do have any problems with win or mepis.

Thank you for any help you can give me. Kelean.

I'll assume you used the same cd/dvd for the slack installs.
I think you may have gotten a corrupt download or a bad burn.

I did not even think of that. Some times I think I am brain dead. I know the md5sum matched. I will download and burn again.

Thanks.

I downloaded new iso files. Burnd them again and reinstalled. So far it is running better. I still get the occasional hard freeze. That might be due to my intel graphics. I an going to try a different driver and see if that helps.

Back to testing things out, Kelean.
