Unhappy gxine and invisible fonts?

hi everyone,

after installing gxine + xine_libs from linuxpackages.net,
gxine complained about the xine engine failing to start.
so i went to the xine homepage, downloaded xine-libs,
compiled them myself, checked my PATH was setup
correctly. then, i compiled my own gxine. all seemed to
go well. and when it started, there was no error, and
it showed a xine-splash screen and xine-logo inside the
gxine window.. so that had worked. but now gxine had
no fonts, or rather, dots in the place where the labels
of the menu options should be. it looks like this..

any suggestions on how to fix this are very much
appreciated.
