I haven't delved any deeper into it since it's fixed now :-) but I think it's the interaction with modular X11. Since you're on 11.0, that's not an issue. Of course, it could be more than that, but it's not worth pursuing IMHO since 11.0 doesn't ship with that version of cairo.

I had a similar problem and it solves changing the codecs from video and audio
