Gui Log out problems

Hi,
I've just installed Slackware 10 after using Mandrake 9.2 for a year or so and hit a couple of small problems.
1. When I logout from KDE I can not restart or shutdown the computer, ie no option for restart or shutdown comes up, just the option to log out. The only way I shut the computer down is by logging in as Root with Gnome and then I get the 3 options.

2. I think I've found out how to fix this one but in case that doesn't work. My mouse wheel doesn't work. I think I have to go into xorgconfig in a terminal and select a different mouse?

TIA
Bearwood

Hi, and welcome to LQ.

Ad 1)
You can enable the shutdown and restart options
via Control Center ... Have a look at
System Administration -> Login Manager -> Shutdown
Alternatively you could always just open a terminal
and type
su -c poweroff
or
su -c reboot

Ad 2)
Not necessarily ... just edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and
add
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
to the mouse-settings

Cheers,
Tink

I have played with the Login Manager and have the shutdown set to allow everyone and remote shutdown as nobody.

A terminal shutdown is fine for me but not for my wife or children unfortunately.

thanks for the info on the mouse.

On Slack 10, I found it at "Applications->System Tools->Login Screen Setup". Since you need to be root, and I wasn't offered a "enter root password" window, I found it easier to run 'gdmsetup' in an xterm as root instead of logging in to X as root. The setting is called "Show Actions Menu" under the Security tab.

I should have posted this sooner .

I just lived with this fo awhile but I was forced to try other Distros after the drive with the MBR died (click, click, click ,,,,,) Just the excuse I was looking for to get another computer and relegate the old one to the children. (They use windows for there games) So new computer and then lots of problems getting a Distro to recognise the new SATA drive and install. FC3 solved the problem and thats what I am using now but that has issues...

Thanks for the input
