Hmmmm..... I don't think it is possible to get rid of that screen. What you are seeing is the base Xserver loading up, and then it dissappears once your windowmanager (or desktop) loads.

Yeah, that screen is kind of like a fact of Linux-life I guess. Could be worse. When I had TWM as my desktop, that thing was always there.

It is possible to make X come up in a different color, but I guess that's up to the display manager.

The Mandrake display Manager comes up with a blue screen. Then it loads it's wallpaper.

this is a guess here but i think you can get rid of that gray screen if you dont start the x server from the command line

if you configure the x to start automagically i think you will can have that gray screen go away

man xinit
man startx

man xsetroot
you shouldn't see it for very long if at all, if there is no xsetroot in your xinit script, then it will take longer to load the window manager default, try man xsetroot, it should give you the answer...

i have already tried all that before. i run init 4 so startx runs automaticaly anyway, and the xsetroot in my xinitrc just changes the colour a couple of seconds after the gray screen appears so... it is still there

thanks again guys, i guess the gray screen will keep coming up everytime i boot as a reminder that i still have no idea of what i'm doing
