that second link explained why. if you are going to use the ATI any way wish you luck I do not use ATI so may be some one else can chime in.

After following the link from your second link...

Under the Release Notes:

The Radeon Xpress 200 is not listed. I guess the card is EOL as far as ATI is concerned.

Their old 9.3 driver was giving me strange screen artifacts, but I had power management for the screen. 'vesa' performs well, but I don't have power management for the screen.
