I would, personally change horizontal sync 30.0 - 70.0
For starters you could backup existing xorg, run xorgconfig
get you X and compare 2 files, one you backed up and newly created. See what's disturbing X

Rather than hopping from tool to tool. Let's stick with one xorg.conf and try to fix that. What version of Slack do you have? Standard, full install? Any updates installed? ( did you edit keyboard to kbd) What kernel? I assume you installed the nvidia driver from nvidia.com, did you follow the directions on how to edit xorg.conf?

Actually, what I mean was that I'd for starters work in console at mc. I've just experimented myself, since I have nothing to lose
(ATI drivers do not work anyway )
Rebooted in console
root
#mc
#cd /etc/X11
#rm xorg.conf
#cd ..
#cd ..
#xf86config
I set all to defaults even mouse, after which thereis no scrolling, of course, but anyway all to defaults.
I have newly created XF86Config-4 which I rename to xorg.conf
#mc
go to /etc/X11
select xorg.conf
F4 to edit
edit Horizsync 30.0-70.0
edit vertrefresh 50-160
edit mouse settings
F2 F10
#reboot
Loding linux...............
root login:
@root#gdm
ALL works

x/x11*6.8.1-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to X.Org's X11R6.8.1 release.
Note that the name of the keyboard driver in the xorg.conf file has
changed from "Keyboard" to "kbd". You'll need to make this change in
order to start X.
