Good news for Window Maker users!

I've just gotten a couple of e-mails today from some developers who are taking over the maintenance and development of the WindowMaker (wmaker) window manager. A new repository has not been set up yet, but basic organization of the team members has begun.

The original developers have given the green light for use of the domain names they own and will continue to provide input/opinions. They both have had no time for development efforts since a long time ago. But they seem to be excited to have some interested parties carry the torch further up the path.

Since my talents with C and Xlibs is limited, I won't play too much of a direct role, I expect, but I am glad that my inquiries have helped to motivate others with more talent to continue the development. I expect that a new code repository will be up and running pretty soon, so maybe Pat can get an updated version into the next Slackware release.

Even though I won't be submitting much code to the project, I have a sort of inside track with the new developers and will be passing along at least some ideas and suggestions. If any of you have ideas or suggestions of your own, I'll be happy to pass them along to the developers.

Hehehe, I could just dance a jig!

That's great news gnashley. I'll look forward to the old windowmaker.info site popping back into life in the near future.

Hmmm. No other replies to this.... I wonder if we're the only two left.

Anyway, as you mentioned suggestions for the new devs...

When you currently resize a window, it causes all other programs that have a window on screen to be blocked. To see for yourself:

open up an xterm and start glxgears, xine playing a movie or sound file with the visualiser window visible or even try something very basic like 'xclock -d -update 1'.

Now start to resize the xterm (or anything else for that matter) and you'll notice that the other programs are blocked until the mouse button is released.

Although I'd expect the application being resized to be blocked while the resize is actioned, it seems a little odd for it to affect all other running X apps too.

That's the only remaining niggle I have with Window Maker. It'd be nice to see this fixed, but it'll still remain my preferred window manager either way.

Gaz.
