After upgrading all the current pkg's, gnome won't start-up when logging in. It just loads kde. I'm a kde-man anyway, but would like to be able to choose either one.

Does anyone have any advice on this problem?

I think I got the same error that you did. What happened to me was the after upgrading with swaret I tried loading up Gnome an it gave me an error with libasound.so.2. I fixed this by installing alsa-lib package from alsa-project.org

I don't have a graphical boot loader, I always start up from the command line by issuing startx. After startx struggled to bring up gnome it gave me an error message pointing me to the right direction.
Maybe you should do the same, try to start gnome from the shell and see what error does it gaves you.

I changed the inittab to 3 as the default run-level and from the CL typed: startx -gnome, then tried: startx --/gnome. After both of these cmd's it gave the same error: 'error while loading shared lib's: libutempter.so.0.

Was the cmd's I issued the correct way to startx with a non-default WM...like gnome?

Does anyone have any ideas about the libtempter.so.0 error?

I'll search and google, but if anyone has suggestions, please reply.

you can just do a xwmconfig and select your desktop or window manager.

I did the $xwmconfig then selected gnome and it started up fine.

Before this I searched and found a libutempter.so.0 executable and placed it in /lib. I'm not sure if this helped or not, but I guess if it isn't helping it won't matter if it's there?

btw: I prefer kde much more than gnome (my opinion).

Glad to hear that BearClaw. I like Gnome a tad better than KDE, but I like Fluxbox the best. I also will be tring out the new XFCE 4, It looks pretty good, and it should be very fast.

Is there an applic like kppp in gnome that will activate your internet connection (i.e. connect to the internet)? Another thing, there used to be a choice in the gnome menu for kde-prog's...it's not in the 2.4 version. Is it in your's?

Yeah!! just open up the shell and type kppp and it should bring it right up. You should not have any problems using Gnome or KDE appz in Fluxbox.

I know! its not in anymore. I mean I dont use gnome that much, I just respect very much all the things they have done, and many people should follow the way they approach the development of their sofware. I'm pretty shure there is a way that you can add programs to the menu, but I dont know right now. You could always start programs from the shell or just add a louncher for the KDE appz, that's pretty easy to do!
