Gnome won't start

when i use "startx" i see this error message (in tty7 - is it Xorg?):

"there was an error starting the gnome settings daemon...
some thing may not work...
the last error message was:
child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occoured.
gnome will still try to restart the settings daemon next time you log in"

i think that windowmaker is also running (a staple on the upper left of the screen).

after about 10 seconds a new toolbar is opened with the gnome logo and two menus - applications and actions.

i don't know where are the log files so i can't take a closer look.

can you help?

Yea i started getting that weird error as well a few days ago. I took the easy way out and made the switch back to KDE, and thankfully noticed how more appropriate KDE is for myself (in many ways).. So i'm sticking to it.
