Gnome startup difficulty

I get the following while logging in as root... normal user is fine in gnome, but this message comes up during the desktop load. The icons on the desktop come and go - finally go - and settle into the "piece of paper" generic icon (except for the edited icons). I'm on Slackware 10.0 current, Gnome desktop - just did a swaret update/upgrade a couple of days ago... no more current for me!

There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

The last error message was:

Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

I believe there was another thread about the exact same problem here, and i do remember writing that i had the same problem, and just took the easy way out and switched back to KDE.

Try searching for it. You might find it.
