Gnome power manager not installed Correctly? Slackware 13

Hey guys. I installed gnome for my slackware 13 64bit from http://gnomeslackbuild.org/ using the quick and easy method. However, when I try to start up gnome, a pop up tells me that "Gnome power-manager configuration defaults was not installed correctly, please contact your computer administrator."

Well, I've never met better computer administrators than you guys. Do you know what might be causing the problem. I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that hasn't worked. I've been searching all over online, but haven't found a solution.

As a reminder this is for slackware 13 64bit. I think that might be pretty important for figuring this out.

TClayton 12-04-2009 07:27 PM

since you already tried installing yourself, have you rebooted?

DranoMax 12-04-2009 09:34 PM

Ya I've tried rebooting after uninstalling and again after reinstalling the whole program and then just the power manager. Still it has this strange problem... Would it be possible that I need to alter the power manager's config files by chance? Has anyone gotten Gnome to work on their slackware 13 box?

TClayton 12-04-2009 09:40 PM

has a box at work running slackware 13 with gnome

a box at home with slackware13_64 with gnome

you may need to make some changes in the configs to get it to work

DranoMax 12-04-2009 09:48 PM

Awesome, it is possible. Do you remember any of the changes you made?

TClayton 12-04-2009 10:02 PM

fresh slackware install, all packages but kde and kdei
logged in, used the quick and easy install
both systems are desktops though
no changes
I will power it on tomorrow to see it there are any config files

DranoMax 12-04-2009 10:15 PM

Weird... This is a laptop and not an entirely fresh install, but... hm...

DranoMax 12-04-2009 10:22 PM

I'm pretty new to the whole reading files from the terminal, but when I use pico /usr/bin/gnome-power-manager, should it show this:
Code:

I don't know if this means it's corrupted or if I just can't read it with pico. Does anyone know what this would mean?

Doesn't that imply it is a binary file and can not be opened using a text editor? Correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Also could you use [code] tags while posting long messages, it improves readability. Just a friendly suggestion. :)

I just installed GnomeSlackBuild on Slackware 13.1, and got the same error as the threadstarter:

I get a black screen with a graphical error box in the upper right corner:
"Gnome Power Manager Not Installed Correctly. Contact your System Administrator"

After about a minute, the box disappears, and the screen stays black and I have to powercycle the laptop.

Since this is an older laptop with P4 desktop chip which I have to keep it plugged in all the time, could I just uninstall the power manager, since it's causing problems?

Have you done a full install? You may want to try running gnome-power-manager from a terminal window to see if there are any error messages spewed out.

Also, make sure you are running the right version of GSB for Slackware 13.0 (if that's the version you are running). Different versions of GSB were built specifically for 13.0 and for 13.1. Look carefully at http://www.slackware.org.uk/gsb/ to see that you have the right version for your Slackware.

Hope it helps!

Set the GSB mirror in slapt-getrc.conf as :CUSTOM (rather than :PREFERRED)
then ran 'slapt-get --update' and 'slapt-get --upgrade'.

Rebooted, and now Gnome is running perfectly. MUCH nicer than KDE4, I have to say.

Thanks again for the help. I'm sure I'll run into another snag soon and be right back here to pester you all with it. ;)
