hi

would you guys recommend a different one.
would you share your experiences with installation, etc...
cheers
If you search this forum for "gnome" you will find many answers to your questions. The short answer is that there are many choices for gnome on Slack 11 (I use dropline), but there are not yet any stable gnomes for Slack 12.
I've used FreeRock 2.14.3 for the last couple of releases. (10.2 and 11.0) I haven't tried it for 12.0 yet. It installs a lot of stuff, so if you don't want a lot of stuff this is not the right thing to use. I am only interested in the libraries needed to support Gramps, a geneology software I have invested too much time in.
They do seem to be falling behind though. There hasn't been too much progress on this lately.
I just take everything as the default. No point in clouding the issue.
The 2.16 Freerock Gnome is working pretty well here on 12.0. I did get an error from Nautilus about a broken lib which I'm sure I can fix with a soft link. Otherwise, no grief.
I talked to Freerock the other day, briefly, and he said he was beginning work on the next version.
I use gnome-slacky 2.18 on SW 12. I did the Gnome+menu install. The only thing that didn't work was gnome-screensaver, which wouldn't lock the screen, so I uninstalled it and installed xscreensaver. Everything else seems fine so far (touch wood).
i installed gnome-slacky for slack11, it made a huge mess.
i dont know if i did anything wrong, but my system got messed up. and for some reason it consumed all available space left of hard disk.
I've finaly got my 'Vanilla Gnome' ironed out if you feel like giving that a whirl. It's posted here on the Slackware forum. Or, as Zack mentioned, DLG is probably right around the corner... Just depends on what kind of GNOME you like really. I have a couple variables in the file 'variables' that tries to save on disk space as the script progress. Don't know how much Hard Drive space you have.
There are other options. Sorry about your system tho... It's really frustrating when crap like that happens.
i too have installed dropline gnome on a 'test' machine with slack11.
i have tried Gware in the past with slack10.2 and it worked fine 'on the pc' but because i often use hummingbird to log to an X session from a windows system, then Gware seemed to be installing several stuff that screwed up my KDE session which would freeze at random times (again that was only the case from remote X -query logins with hummingbird)..
with dropline and so far at least it seems that not only gnome works fine locally and remotely but also that the KDE session does not get screwed up.
coolio that is
We've managed to strip things down to a point of which only 8 Slackware packages are replaced, and I hope we can drop 2 or 3 more this week by the time the beta is complete.
Overall, I'm really happy with how things have turned out so far. We've made some large steps with this release and I think it'll be the best one yet. A couple more days, and I think we'll have it totally finished.
