Gnome desktop is blocked!!!

Hello,

I recently installed slackware 10.0 and I have a little problem with my gnome desktop. Everything else works just fine but when I log into gnome desktop, there are no icons (there should be a few basic ones I think), and I'm not allowed to create new ones either when I right click on the background. Not even if i'm under root!!!

Whats going on here?

Thanks in advance

look configuration manager ... util in gnome menu under system tools

in /apps/nautilus/options see if show desktop is disabled

if you unselect it you cant make icons on the desktop

It seems to be set up correctly

In the configuration editor under app/nautilus/preferences, show desktop is pressed down. I suppose this means that its set. I tried both to be sure but didn't get any results either way.

I looked around there a little bit and I saw other values that could be relevant.

under /app/nautilus/desktop there's a home icon visible and trash icon visible icon. They weren't checked and they had no value set for their names. I checked them but I dont get any results either

I don't really know where else to look.

Is the desktop area just black? I had that happen when I didn't install a dependency of Nautilus. In my case, it was cdparanoia-whatever.tgz.

Open a terminal and type "nautilus". What happens?

Nope, the background is blue like for usual gnome initial startup except there are NO icons whatsoever. I tried nautilus in the console and it wouldnt work it said there was a missing library cdparanoia or something, so I installed it from the slackware cd and after a reboot I typed in nautilus in the xconsole and it started and I got the icons going. It doesn't look perfectly clean a little error is thrown but its working still THanks a bunch!!!

Kindda weird that an essential library wouldnt get installed like that by default though. Oh well.....happy its solved.
