Gnome&LXDE offline install for 13.37

Is it possible to somehow install just base Slackware without default KDE,Xfce DE's etc. and then through shell install Gnome or LXDE without internet connection? Like download as package file then put on seperate partition or burn in media then access with shell|terminal and install like any other downloaded package? Or i should pick Slackware based distro like Salix who already includes LXDE? I always liked Slackware but i dislike forced KDE and few more on default install(everyone has their personal taste and opinion so chill) + net install for Gnome takes way too long time..btw is there even Slackware based distro with Gnome as default?

You don't need an Internet connection to install LXDE. You just need to have the packages. Download them from Ponce (http://ponce.cc/slackware/slackware64-13.37/lxde/) where and when it's convenient for you. The move them to non-Internet-connected Slackware box and install them with "upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new *.t?z".

I noticed link contains "64" in name but i have "32"..will it work for 32 system? Also it is for this box just after i tried net install for Gnome on Absolute - it was pain to avoid in future.

No, the 32-bit packages are found elsewhere on the site:

You would have found them if you tried reducing the URL to ponce.cc/slackware.

OK thanks. Works if installed on default now just need do it later on base install..now only Gnome question left.

Yea my bad but this trick doesn't work for every website out there anyway so no biggy.

Last time I played with Gnome on Slackware, I used Gnome Slackbuild (GSB), and there's instructions on there that outline how to set up an offline repository. Look there for a more clear solution, but it basically comes down to installing slapt-get (available at the GSB website), downloading the GSB files and moving them to the offline computer, and then adding the directory where you saved them as a repository for slapt-get.

I had the exact situation about a year and a half ago and it worked out for me with GSB.

GSB-projects dont work well on Slackware 13.37, and of course, current. I think its my NVIDIA system(the nouveau and the proprietary drivers), but i cant be sure. The project looks dead or at least in hold, so theres no one around to launch patchs and upgrades.

I did managed to install GSB-3.0 on my Slackware 13.37 before(some months ago), but now it breaks and dont work.

The gnome 2.30 from GSB is working, but u must replace some packages from Slackware and if u dont pay attention,in slackware-13.37, u will downgrade some others packages.

I tried the 32bit LXDE packages from Ponce.
LXDE is not very mature, feels buggy.
I ran into a bug when the application menu is blank when the panel is at top of the screen.
And since I have my panel at top and like it that way, then it was a deal breaker for me.
LXDE is promising, it has all the right features... but it needs more time to mature.
If you want something rock solid that's worthy Slackware then try IceWm, although it's not full desktop environment, it's close.

Their repository was last pushed-to a week ago. So no it doesn't.

Their gsb-user mailing list is active, and it has messages from contributers that were posted as recently as late last week.

I should clarify. The menu was there but was "scrolled" way down. When I clicked the menu I then had to use up arrow key to scroll up and then the menu would show.
I was also getting an error message about a missing lib when launching lxterminal, I think it was libvte.so.9
I did install all packages from that lxde directory in your repository so that lib had to come from somewhere else.
I should mention that I had kde and xfce uninstalled at that point so maybe I was missing something that one of those to provide.
I've since gone back to the original xfce 4.62.

vte package is between the standard slackware packages.

can the menu issue be dependant on your gtk theme?

Sorry Dugan...they did updated some things last week.

my bad...

but gnome 3.0 still dont works to me...maybe their next build, gsb-3.2.0.

And as i said, the gnome 2.32.0 from GSB works great.
