Gnome-alternatives for Slack
 

Hi, I would like to try some Gnome for Slackware, and now it's not maintained in Slack anymore I was wondering how other people use it and what the experiences are? I know about DropLine but don't want to use that because - as I've heard - it will totally alter slackware by installing pam and other stuff; then there's GSB and LiNuCe's packages, guess there's more out there. Actually I'm looking for something that uses standard slackware-packages, is modular, won't screw up my slackware installation, and is actively maintained. Please tell me what you use and what you (dis)like about it! Thanx.

personally i'm a huge fan of fluxbox. it's easy to install, simple to configure, and very fast. of course, it doesn't have any eye candy either. you might try out enlightenment if you like eye candy. it's got a very unique feel, and i had a great time playing around with it.

tnx! I'm not really a gnome-user myself, I'm on XFCE and I'm definitely not gonna leave that. But a lot of very nice apps have gnome-dependencies, so basically I want to install Gnome to run it's apps on xfce :-)

The LiNuCE Gnome packages work well with XFCe without PAM, dBus, a kernel upgrade, and HAL.

As a matter of fact the first time I installed it the XFCe file manager showed up in the Gnome applications menu.

For fun you can compile your own gnome from source. What a nightmare trying to get that baby into a slack pack. Then you might understand why patrick isn't maintaining it anymore.

You could download an rpm of gnome and use the rpm2tgz tool in slackware.
