gmtp does not connect to kindle fire hd 7 -- "no raw devices found"

I guess the title pretty much sums it up. I want to transfer files to a kindle and apparently gmtp is the way to do it, but it gives that error "no raw devices found" when try to connect.

Code:
# ~: mtp-detect
libmtp version: 1.1.10

Listing raw device(s)
   No raw devices found.
It doesn't seem to be listed with 'lsusb' either. There is also no udev event when I plug it in...

What gives?
