Hi. I am trying to compile the latest development release of xchat. I got a compiling error saying I needed the glib-2.0.x (can't remember exact version but it was 2.0.x). The current glib version I have and is on slackware 8.1 is glib-1.2.10. I cannot find glib-2.0.6.tgz on any of the slackware FTP sites. I looked at the changelog and glib-2.0.x isn't on there. They recompiled glib-1.2.10 on October 22nd according to the changelog. I tried downloading glib-2.0.6.tar.bz2 and compiling it myself. However, ./configure gives me this error:
*** GLIB requires a 64 bit type. You might want to consider
*** using the GNU C compiler.
Slack 8.1 provides xchat 1.8.9 which is the latest stable release. If you insist on working with the development versions, then the GTK+ package has to be upgraded as well to version 2. This might present some problems with other programs as well.
The best resources for compiling GTK+ are at gtk.org, the development site. You have to read the README and INSTALL files. Many times there are special changes that need to made for particular installations.
Not worth it, LOL. I'll just stick with the currect version.
Actually on my version I got 1.9.4. Maybe I upgraded, I can't remember. The reason I wanted to upgrade is with 1.9.4, I cannot find a way to edit IRC servers. In past versions there was. For example, I want to add a server with the server address, port, username, password.....I cannot find a way to do this with xchat 1.9.4. Any ideas?
Well, according to the web page at xchat.org 1.9.4 might be the last version that was not based on GTK+ 2. They have an item at the top of the page where they want to know about features that did work in 1.8. But you must of upgraded to it because even the slackware-current tree includes 1.8.9. Their page also states that the interface changed from Perl to Python with 1.9.2 so that may have effected the way many options are setup. Since I do not use any IRC software I am not sure how I can provide any assistance that area. I do not what the upgrades actually offer except perhaps in the area of security. But you might attempt to backup your current version of xchat and install the distributed version of xchat to see if it allows the operation desired. You would know more about the trade-offs here than I would.
