I installed slack 10.2 on a fresh installation of Virtual PC 2004.. I decided to not install KDE and went with fluxbox. Now that it has finished installing, I created a new user and tried to start x by startx. it takes my command, but nothing happens, and I cannot put in another command. Ctrl-c doesn't work eather. Its been a while since I've used linux, what do I do to get fluxbox working?
There could be a million reasons why it's not working. You will need to get more info for any usefull advise. Try looking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or ~/.xsession-errors to see if there is any usefull information. If you need any help interpreting the logs, just ask.
Spits some text to the console(too fast to read, I'm assuming its what I posted) and the screen turns black. I'm wondering if its becuase I'm running it in Virtual PC.
I might try Arch Linux...since if I remember correctly that was smaller and is easy to setup.
from your error log, it looks like you don't have your xorg.conf set up. What (if anything) did you do to configure it? You can see if 'xorgsetup' will auto configure it for you, otherwise, you will need to run 'xorgconf' (I think). If this isn't the right utility, look around in the X11 bin directory or search on google.
it looks like your mouse is not /dev/mouse , and so you get a No Core Pointer error. If it's usb try adding /dev/input/mice in xorg.conf instead of /dev/mouse or run 'mouseconfig' again and reconfigure your mouse.
You can test which mouse setting to use by going to /dev and issuing "cat mouse0" and then moving mouse. It should show random chars to appear on screen to tell it's working in that. My mouse has sometime been /dev/input/mice
