Before just typing startx after a fresh install, you will need to configure X by logging in as root and then typing: xf86config to configure X. Then once completed, I would suggest creating another user so your not logged in as root with the adduser command which makes it easy to create a user, prompting you to setup, configure. Once you create the user, log out as root and login as that user, run xwmconfig to configure what WindowManager/Desktop you want to use as default, then type startx to start the GUI.

Cheers.

Would it be better to use
useradd -m username
to add a user, rather than adduser?

I could be wrong.

And spurn Patrick's handy-dandy script? Nah.

And, actually, if you can do framebuffering, you may not need to configure X though, for better performance, you'll want to. Sometimes just 'startx' works, though.

Well, I learn something new everyday.
There was no man entry for adduser, but after I less'ed /usr/sbin/adduser I see that you are correct.

Thanks

Edit: And now I see that adduser in red hat 8 is just a symbolic link to useradd.
