If you can figure out where it is stored (if it is stored), a simple dd will do the trick

here is a sample which reads the volume label of the optical disk

dd if=/dev/sr0 bs=1 skip=32808 count=32

sr0 is my cdrom drive. tested and works like a charm.

Sorry for the delay. About the existence of a medium serial number for optical disks, you can look at INF-8090 Rev 6.1, an SFF Committee specification. In page 413 the GET CONFIGURATION command is described. Corresponding to this description there is table 222, where Feature number 0109h (Media Serial Number) can be found. Regards.

ftp://ftp.seagate.com/sff/INF-8090.PDF (8MB btw)

This is version 7 (the latest) so some stuff is different

The Feature Table is Table 340 Page 563
0109h Media Serial Number has a reference to see MMC standards

So http://www.t10.org/drafts.htm#MMC_Family

I don't have access to published version so I can only see MMC-6
http://www.t10.org/cgi-bin/ac.pl?t=f&f=mmc6r02g.pdf

This has more or less the same Table (Table 89 Page 195)
109h Media Serial Number "Legacy See Annex E"

Annex E (Page 640)
Quote:
E.5 The Media Serial Number Feature (0109h)
MMC support for the Media Serial Number Feature was removed from MMC-5 and does not appear in MMC-6.
Consult MMC-4 for the most recent information on implementing and using the Media Serial Number Feature.
So officially it's gone anyway.

Very kind of you to have dig into the specs.
T13/1410D rev 3b, IDENTIFY DEVICE command:
Quote:
8.15.59 Words (205:176): Current media serial number
Words (205:176) contain the current media serial number. Serial numbers shall consist of 60 bytes. The first 40
bytes shall indicate the media serial number and the remaining 20 bytes shall indicate the media manufacturer.
However:
Quote:
In response to this command, devices that implement the PACKET Command feature set shall post command
aborted and place the PACKET Command feature set signature in the Command Block registers (see 9.12).
As all of my drives implement the packet command feature set, I have to fall back on the IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE command. But this does not mention the media serial #.

In spite of the media serial # having been dropped, as the media manufacturer is a datum currently being used, it seems (for instance, 'cdrecord -media-info -v dev=<bus>,<target>,<lun>' prints it for all of my optical disks), it is plausible, then, that the media serial number is there too.

If I had the sources of cdrecord, I could, perhaps, see how it retrieves the manufacturer name. Well, that's all. Regards.
