Question getting slackware 9.1 to autologin (into X)

how can i get slackware 9.1 to autologin a user and startx automagically???

i've read some posts here describing how to do this with kde and stuff but i'm wondering if there's a way to do it that's not kde-specific cuz kde is way too heavy for this old pc (we're running blackbox, icewm, and sometimes xfce, etc.)...

thanks in advance!

=)

to do this you must edit /etc/inittab
at line 24, it will read id:3:initdefauld:
Change the 3 to a 4 and that will tell slack to automatically launch run level 4. This will automatically bring up the X server and launch GDM. if thats not installed it will launch KDM. and if that isin't found it will try XDM. if you would perfer KDM to launch instead of GDM you must alter /etc/rc.d/rc.4 removing lines 15-18 (or commenting them out) and then it will go to KDM. As for booting directly into a window manager, I am not sure of how to do this. I hope it helps though.

All I can say is that either gdm or kdm will do it, and
the WM you start doesn't have to be kde or gnome.

can it be done with xdm???

i ask because my xdm seems to work fine...

i installed gdm, and it's not working yet... i'm thinking dependancy problems or configuration...

the pc boots-up fine but when it's trying to load gdm it stalls, not command line-style, but (as best i can describe it) a sorta-gui way (the mouse cursor is there, and there's a weird grey background, but nothing else)... so then i have to go back to runlevel 3 to be able to work...

what's the basic configuration needed to get gdm running???

what's the basic dependancies it needs to be satisfied???

slackware rules!!!

=)
