Getting KDE to start

I just got Slackware 9.1 and lilo installed. Once I start Slackware, I login as root, and try startx, it comes up with bars, and does nothing else. I try startkde, it just errors. I try 'kdm' and it comes up with bars and does nothing else. What am I doing wrong?

You need to run xf86config as root, then do any more modifications to /etc/X11/XF86Config you need to do, and then log in as a user and run xwmconfig to choose your default gui, and then startx (better to do it as a user, and not use a gui as root). I don't think Slackware includes startx in root's path by default.

What errors, what bars? With this little info we can do nothing. What version of KDE did you install? Did you use the slack rom install or did you install 9.1 and used cvd to install KDE?

The fact that gdm wont start either makes me think of a X error more then a specific KDE problem.

Sorry. If I can't get it with the first poster's advice, I will get the error message. The bars... are just bars, a full screen of colored bars. I did a full install of Slackware, so the KDE I installed is whatever it installed in the full install.

Post here the output of:

$more /var/log/XFree86.0.log

So we can try to point out why X is freezing.

Oops... sorry

I have a cable connection through a router. The router automatically assigns my IP.
