Unhappy Generic video driver, how to upgrade ?

Hi,

I am using Slackware 10.2 and my video card was set up as a generic driver I think and it has been working ok. Today I thought about searching for any specific drivers for my PCI video card ( Creative Blaster Savage 4 - 32MB ),

I have found a tar.gz in a website with the specific driver for my card but now I am wondering how this can be installed, I do not want to screw up my whole installation but obviously I am willing to deal with errors

How should I go about installing this tarball ?

The contents of the .tar.gz ( when opened with winzip, non linux computer here at work ) are :

cardsDB
CTXconfig
dialogC
s3sav_install
Xf86_s3sav

all of them without an extension.

Any thoughts will be appreciated before trying to do this at home.

I am also willing to accept "if it ain't broken don't fix it"

Try this:
Code:
mv package.tar.gz package.tgz && installpkg package.tgz

Obviously, "package" would be the name of the tarball you got

Regards

Open xorg.conf and change the driver name to "savage".

Found at http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/docs/HARDWARE

Don't rename it and use installpkg. It will just install those five files to /.

It would probably help if you gave more info, like the relevant sectoin of your xorg.conf, what website you downloaded that driver from, etc.

If you want to try the package you downloaded, try reading the s3sav_install file.
