Generic Radeon Driver & GLX


The short version:
Is it possible to turn on graphic accleration in the xorg generic radeon driver?

Background:
For the last few days I've been working with DVD copying and authoring programs and during that project I un-installed the ATi proprietary driver and started using the xorg generic radeon driver. I don't play any graphic intense games so other than the "snap" of the screens popping up, I don't miss it, and everything works Better without Ati's driver.

Sometime ago Mr. Volkerding included information on how to turn on graphic acceleration in the installation notes, so I've been including "dri" and "glx" and "mode 0666" in my xorg.conf files for quite a while.

I've scanned the site and the specific thread on the subject at the top of this, the Slackware forum, for information on adding graphic acceleration to the generic radeon driver.

The question is, is it possible to turn on graphic accleration in the generic radeon driver? Someone has claimed he did it and posted his xorg.conf, but I didn't see anything there that stands out as "the switch" that turns it on.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I somehow managed to turn it on. Last time I ran glxinfo it said, "direct rendering: No," but this time it says it is on and glxgears works, but there is no mention of the ATi card anywhere.
A translation, please?

Besides your two options, you'll have to set some more.

I use GLX with an ATI Radeon FireGL 9000; specifically AIGLX in the recent X.org version which is part of Slackware 12.

You'll have to add in your xorg.conf:

I found also literally dozens of other options to be set or unset to influence direct rendering - see below.

and it worked out of the box after activating it. It might NOT work however with newer ATI cards.

I have 2 device sections because I have 2 cards (an integrated one besides the Radeon). You don't need the Intel device section for the Radeon to work, and viceversa.

Yes, I use a serial scroll mouse.

Thank you Su-Shee and folkenfanel!
By using your suggestions the glxgear rate has gone from around 1725 fps to 2357-9 fps.
However the "composite" "enabled" option caused a
"libgl warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x46"
By commenting out the "composite" "enabled" option the error has gone away.

Now, the video has started to develop some strange "habits."
On occasion there are "mouse trails" and when moving up and now menus, narrow blue or black "boxes" will appear along the outer edge of the menu box.
Any suggestions as to what might cure this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Found the problem:

Option "backingstore" "true"

commented it out and the video problems went away.


"enablepageflip" "true" give the biggest speed boast. By adding that one "switch" the glxgears rate went up almost 500 fps.

However, "colortiling on" slows things down a little bit as does, "opengloverlay" and "allowglxwithcomposite."

Google Earth, which would NOT run with the ATi proprietary driver now runs and behaves itself but it is still has that "frame by frame" motion to it.
