gdm loses connection to X

I installed Slackware 9.1 and Dropline GNOME. Since I own a Radeon 9800 Pro I also installed the drivers from ATI's web site. When I log in and execute startx everything is fine. GNOME loads and looks great.

However, when I want to use gdm it does not work at all. The display server stops but gdm still runs. I checked the log files but I do not see anything useful in there - basically the same output that I get when running just startx.

The gdm log files in /var/lib/log/gdm don't contain much either.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
