hey just wondering if anyone could give me some insight into this one..i'm trying to install gtk 2.8.10 on slack 10.2 in order to install gDesklets 0.35.3. i keep getting this dep error but i have already installed the latest release of glib, atk, pango and ciaro.
i'm not sure what else to do.
checking for BASE_DEPENDENCIES... Requested 'glib-2.0 >= 2.8.5' but version of GLib is 2.6.6
configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.8.5 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.9.0 cairo >= 0.9.2) were not met.
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively you may set the BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS environment variables
to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for
more details.
Assuming you compiled from source, what was your configure line like? I would advise upgrading the gnome-stuff from standard slackpackages in one of many ways:
1. Pick one of the many gnome-package suppliers (Freerock and Dropline have some good PR people) and install that lot.
2. Using the .slackbuild scripts: fish around on the 3rd and 4th disks for the gnome slackbuild scripts and build updated packages. These should be a little more portable than the method below, but, the result is the same if you're just upgrading one workstation.
3. From source, use: ./configure --prefix=/usr && make && checkinstall
By default ./configure installs programs with a prefix of /usr/local, so you'll end up with 2 versions of gnome. The slackpackages are installed with a prefix of /usr ... using --prefix=/usr will make sure you put all your stuff in the same places Slack does.
I personally use option 3. Make sure you removepkg first, and then whack-away!
For option 2 (and for some variations of checkinstall, I think) you can upgradepkg your new stuff instead of installpkg'ing it.
ok, right now i don't have gnome installed, only kde. I figured that i might have to insall gnome. I went to the gnome site but i couldn't figure out which packages i need to install it. they have sources, desktop, platform and i didn't know which ones to install. Is there any info that would help me with installin gnome? I didn't find any usefull info on the gnome website, but then again i am still a newbie =oP
please disregard my previous message as i should have checked out dropline and freerock b4 i posted it. Thanx for the info and i hope all goes well, if not, u'll be hearin from me again
